NOB- New Delhi news: President Draupadi Murmu has given assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill-2025. It is known that after lengthy discussions in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, both the Houses approved this bill separately. With this, the bill has reached President Draupadi Murmu. With this, President Draupadi Murmu gave assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on 05.04.2025. The details related to this are as follows. With the assent of the President, this bill has now become an act. This new Waqf Act will come into force on the date the Central Government issues a notification in the official gazette. The President has also given his assent to the Mussalman Waqf (Repeal) Bill, 2025. This bill has also been passed by Parliament. This new Wakf Act seeks to improve the management and administration of Waqf properties in India. It is also an attempt to amend the Waqf Act, 1995. It proposes changes in the composition of the Waqf Council, boards, criteria for establishing Waqf properties, and the powers of the board in identifying Waqf properties. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was first introduced in Parliament in August 2024 year. However, there were strong protests from the opposition and Muslim organizations. In this context, the bill was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) headed by BJP MP Jagadambika Paul. After months of discussion on the bill, the JPC submitted its report on February 13th 2025 year. It was approved by the Union Cabinet on February 19th 2025. However, the opposition MPs in the JPC expressed concern that their proposed amendments were rejected and their dissent notes were removed without their knowledge. While the JPC rejected 44 amendments proposed by the opposition MPs, it accepted 14 changes suggested by the NDA members. Finally, the Centre introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha on 02.04.2025. Thereafter a heated debate lasting almost 12 hours, voting was held in the early hours of 03.04.2025. The Lok Sabha passed the bill with a vote of 288-232. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill came before the Rajya Sabha on 03.04.2025 afternoon. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the bill in the Rajya Sabha and initiated the debate. A lengthy debate was held on this bill in the Rajya Sabha as well. When voting was held on this bill in the early hours of 04.02025 a total of 128 votes were cast in favor of the bill and 95 votes were cast against the bill. This means that both houses of Parliament have approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. Meanwhile, Congress MP Mohammad Javed and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi have approached the Supreme Court challenging the validity of the Waqf Bill.
