Indus River Agreement, 64 year old agreement ends

NOB_ Indus River Agreement, 64 year old agreement ends

NOB-Bharat news: The massacre committed by terrorists in the Baisaran Valley of Kashmir’s Pahalgam has left the whole of India in tears. 28 innocent tourists lost their lives in this attack. Another 60 people were injured. The Pakistan-inspired Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy organization. The Resistance Front (TRF) has claimed responsibility for this. Indian intelligence agencies have found that Pakistan was also involved in this attack. Although the Pakistani government is denying its involvement it is clear that the country is the one who gave the impetus to the terrorists. The central government was immediately alerted about the Pahalgam attacks. Prime Minister Modi ended his Saudi tour midway and returned. He has been holding talks with the Defense Ministry and the Cabinet since 23.04.2025 morning. After this, the Indian government took a sensational decision regarding Pakistan. The Centre has said that the Attari Integrated Check Post will be closed immediately if any Pakistani citizens or tourists are in India and they should leave for their country within a week. It has made it clear that no Pakistani citizens will be allowed to enter India. It has also said that the Indus Water Treaty is being suspended. Pakistani citizens will not be allowed to travel to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) visas. Those who are currently in India should also leave for their country within 48 hours.

Indus Water Treaty

India has given Pakistan, which is nurturing cross-border terrorism, a chance many times. However, that country has not changed. Now, with the latest terror attack, the central government has become serious. Saying that there is nothing to ignore anymore, it has canceled the Indus Water Treaty. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had said that blood and water did not flow together. But till now, he has not gone to the Indus Waters Treaty with the idea of not bothering Pakistan. Along with the recent diplomatic relations with Pakistan, India has also terminated the 64-year-old Indus Water Treaty.

Pakistan to become a desert

This is a big shock to Pakistan. There is no doubt that if the Indus River water stops, Pakistan will turn into a desert. Pakistan is one of the countries with the least water resources in the world. The main source of its life is the Indus River water alone. The entire country’s agriculture depends on the Indus water. This is the main source for states like Punjab and Sindh. Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh are areas with the least water resources. Now if India stops this water, all these areas will turn into a desert. Pakistan, which is already facing extreme inflation and poverty, will surely be devastated by this blow. This will also lead to a shortage of drinking water there.

What is the agreement ?

In 1960, the then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistani President Ayub Khan signed an agreement on the waters of the Indus River, mediated by the World Bank. According to this, India will have control over the eastern rivers Beas, Ravi, and Sutlej, and Pakistan will have control over the western rivers Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum. The Indus River originates in China and flows through India into Pakistan. That is why the two countries signed an agreement on this river. Due to this agreement, Pakistan uses 80 percent of the water of the Indus River. This Indus Waters Treaty has been controversial many times in the past. There is also an argument that Pakistan has benefited more than India from this. After the 2016 Uri terror attack, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commented, “Blood and water cannot flow together.” India officially informed Pakistan to renegotiate this treaty in 2023. However, Pakistan has expressed its desire to abide by the policies set out in the old Indus Water Treaty. But now India has decided to give Pakistan a stern warning. That is why it has cut off the Indus waters, which are the lifeblood of that country.
