RBI has introduced a new mechanism called ‘Tokenization’ to facilitate online shopping. Also, it is known that the central bank has revealed that contactless payments can be made very securely. Banks and non-banking financial companies have to implement the ‘Credit Card Debit Card’ guidelines from July 1. To help customers make secure transactions, card details are stored as an encrypted “token”, it said. It mandates replacing the original card data with an encrypted digital token. These tokens allow payment to be made without revealing customer details. As a result, cardholders’ online transaction experiences are enhanced. Protects card information from cyber criminals.

How To Generate Tokens

♦ To initiate a payment transaction prior to purchase, one has to go to the e-commerce merchant’s website or application

♦ In order to buy the products they have to enter the complete information of their card.

♦ Enter the card details on the checkout page of the shopping website. After that select tokenization.

♦ Select Create Token and enter OTP received on official mobile phone or email. This completes the transaction.

♦ There is a chance to tokenize as many cards as they like. A four-digit token is sufficient for subsequent purchases on the same website or app.

♦ RBI is of the view that this will prevent fraud and make it difficult for hackers to collect customer information.

♦ According to this, there is no need to identify the 16-digit card details and the expiry date of the card.

Also the card issuer must obtain a one-time password based consent from the cardholder to activate the credit card. In case the customer does not activate more than 30 days from the date of issue, the credit card account will be closed at no cost to the customer, within seven working days from the date of confirmation, regardless of any consent.
