A committee has made a key suggestion to the central government to reduce carbon emissions in the country. It said that diesel vehicles should be completely banned by 2027 in cities with a population of more than 10 lakh. It suggested that steps should be taken to use electric and gas based vehicles in their place. Also, by 2035, motorcycles, scooters and tricycles running on conventional engines should be phased out. To this extent, a committee headed by Tarun Kapoor, former secretary of the oil ministry, submitted a report. Although this report reached the government in February itself, no decision has been taken so far.

The committee suggested that electric vehicles should be encouraged to phase out two-wheeler/three-wheeler vehicles powered by combustion engines by 2035. In the meantime, it has been suggested to increase the proportion of ethanol added to oil. As far as four wheelers are concerned, half of the vehicles including passenger cars and taxis need to be converted to run on petrol mixed with ethanol and the remaining 50 percent to electric vehicles. In its report, it said that diesel-powered vehicles should be avoided as soon as possible. The report opined that they should be banned especially in cities with a population of more than 10 lakhs by 2027. CNG is suggested to be used as an alternative fuel till the shift to EVs. It has been stated in the report submitted to the center that the extension of fame subsidy should also be considered.

India aims to achieve Net Zero carbon emission by 2070. China, America and EU are currently in the first three positions in the countries that emit the most carbon emissions, but India is in the fourth position. In order to become carbon neutral, the country aims to have 50 percent of its energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030.
