According to the latest information provided by the government sources to the leading news agency Reuters, it is known that India’s population census is likely to start in September 2024. Sources said the new survey will begin next month and take around 18 months to complete. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation have drawn up a timeline. Officials said they are aiming to release the census details by March 2026. It is said that the final approval from the PM’s office is awaited to start the process.

The last census in the country was conducted in 2011. Currently, government schemes and financial data are being created based on this calculation data. The country’s once-in-a-decade population census was supposed to be completed in 2021, but was delayed due to the Corona epidemic. For the past few years, economists have been criticizing the government for conducting the census. Taking a census will provide clarity on various other statistics including inflation, schemes, employment projections.
