EFFICACY OF PRESENT VACCINES ON COVID VARIANTS

Till now as per the clinical data, the Covishield and Covaxin  can work only on SARS-Cov-2 variants like α(Alpha),β(Beta),γ(Gamma),δ(Delta). Delta plus variant has entered India 6months ago and researchers and scientists of ICMR are suspecting on the efficacy of these vaccines on the delta plus variant.

The Delta plus variant has particular mutation on its spike protein which makes it almost non detectable by the human immune system. The Beta plus variant has a mutation K417N making it to have immune evasion properties this is similar in Delta plus variant but with little modifications. These mutations may lower the efficacy of present Covid vaccines with uncertainty of further situations to manage said by Dr.Bhatnagar.

This Delta plus variant is though very similar to Delta variant but it has greater liking and attaching capacity  to the mucosal lining in lungs compared to other variants.

ICMR says that this new variant can be detected by RT-PCR or antigen testing.

Right now the transmission rate of Delta plus variant is at high in many countries in the world. The severity of the infection and its results are yet to be monitored. But this variant is regarded as a variant of concern by WHO.

The only way to stop its spreading is to maintain social distance, wearing mask, having personal hygiene ,avoiding crowds etc., as per the norms of WHO. If person to person contact is limited, this may cut the chain and further stop the virus to get a scope of mutation.
