History of Rajahmundry City

Historians say that Rajaraja Narendra ruled Rajahmundry as his capital. Historians are not able to tell clearly about the kings before Raja Raja Narendra due to lack of historical records. According to one account, Rajahmundry was ruled by Ammaraja Vishnuvardhana between 919-934, followed by Ammaraja Vijayaditya (945-970). Rajamahendri gained historical and cultural importance during the Chalukya rule. Historians say that even though Rajaraja Narendra ruled for 41 years, there was no stability of peace. During the rule of this king, Nannayya, who was a master of poetry, started composing Sri Mahabharata here on the banks of Godavari.

Rajahmundry has a prominent position in the Kakatiya Empire. 1323 Kakatiya Empire collapses after Tughlaq (Muhammad bin Tughlaq) conquers Orugallu. The present mosque in Rajahmundry was built during this Tughlaq rule by demolishing the temple of Venugopalaswami (built by Vengi Chalukyas). After that the Reddy kings (1353-1448) rebelled against Tughlaq and won. After that, Kapileswara Gajapati, Purushottama Gajapati, Srikrishna Devaraya, Prataparudra Gajapati, were the kings who ruled Rajahmundry.
