Endometriosis is a condition which is known by growth of endometrial tissue in sites other than the uterus, most commonly in pelvic cavity and other parts of the body. This tissue responds to hormonal changes of menstrual cycle with bleeding, inflammation and pain. An estrogen dependent condition, which mainly affects females during their reproductive years (pre-menopause). Naturally in woman’s menstrual cycle, the uterine lining (endometrium) thickness, detaches and bleeds with each cycle. However the problem occurs with endometriosis is that the endometrial tissue that is outside of the uterus acts the same with each period as the uterine lining but has no way to exit the body. The tissue that is shed becomes the cause of problems like ovarian cysts (endometriomas), irritation, inflammation, scar tissue development, and adhesions (bands of fibrous tissues that can cause other tissues and organs to stick together. Apart from the severe pain, it can cause other complications, infertility is the most severe complications that can come from endometriosis.
Symptoms include:
Dysmenorrhoea (irregular periods)
Non- cyclic pelvic and abdominal pain
Subfertility
Painful periods
Painful sex
Bowel or urination symptoms or pain
Excessive bleeding
Infertility
There has been no direct cause found for endometriosis and is a prevalent female disorder that impacts an estimated 1 in 10 females. In simple terms, the disorder is defined by the uterine lining that grows abnormally outside of the uterus. The possible symptoms can vary from female to female and cause a wide variety of complications but the condition is very treatable.
Home Remedies:
- Heat:
Taking a warm bath or placing a heating pad or hot water bottle on the lower abdomen can help to relax cramping pelvic muscles which should reduce pain.
- Pelvic massage:
Massaging the pelvic area including parts of the abdomen sides and back was helpful in reducing menstrual pain associated with endometriosis. Massage can also be done using oil.
- Turmeric:
Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties. It may inhibit estradiol a form of estrogen that helps prevent excess tissue growth.
- Dietary changes:
Minimizing the consumption of red meat and increasing intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help to improve overall health.
- Avoiding too much dairy products, processed foods, and sugars.
- Light exercise:
Regular exercise helps to release endorphins. These hormones can reduce pain. Exercise may also help to lower estrogen levels in the body and reduce symptoms. Stretch before and after each workout.
- Rest:
Getting extra rest is important especially during menstruation. Lying on the side with knees pulled into the chest can help to relieve pain or pressure in the back.
- Herbal supplements:
These may help to reduce symptoms though very little research has been done. Supplements like Shathavari guda and Ashokarista helps in treating endometriosis depending upon the intensity.
- Omega-3 fatty acids:
Omega-3 fatty acids may help to reduce inflammation. Naturally they are found in fatty fish like salmon.
A proper diet, exercise and stress free life is necessary for the condition to be completely cured.
