NOB- New Delhi news: The recently announced ‘Pradhana Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ has been approved by the Union Cabinet. This has paved the way for installing solar panels on the roof of the house at a subsidized cost. We can also take advantage of this central government scheme. Besides taking subsidy, we can get free electricity for our home for lifetime.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi first announced the new rooftop solar scheme (PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana) in January 2024. Subsequently, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned the scheme while presenting the budget in the Lok Sabha on 01st February 2024. Under this scheme, it is targeted to install solar panels on one crore houses across the country.

Benefit to common man and government

Both the common man and the government will get benefit from this scheme. Ordinary people can generate electricity with solar energy on the roof of their houses. Thus, you will be freed from electricity bills. Thousands of rupees could be saved every month. By generating more electricity from solar energy, India can become self-reliant in its electricity needs.

Subsidy up to Rs.78 thousand

According to the official announcement, the central government will give a subsidy of Rs.30 thousand for 1 kilowatt solar panel system. A subsidy of Rs.60 thousand is available for a 2 kilowatt panel and a subsidy of Rs.78 thousand for a 3 kilowatt solar panel system.

Cheap interest loan without collateral

Apart from the subsidy, the additional amount spent on the installation of solar panels can be availed in the form of a loan. Low interest is charged on this. Common people do not need to submit any collateral for this loan. According to the central announcement, a collateral free loan at an interest rate of 7 percent will be available for installing solar panels of maximum 3 kW capacity on the roof of the house.

How to apply for subsidy?

  1. First register at https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
  2. For registration, electricity distribution company name, customer number, mobile, e-mail are required.
  3. Login to the portal with the help of user/customer number, mobile number.
  4. Select the form to apply for Rooftop Solar Scheme.
  5. After review, approval will be given to eligible applicant.
  6. After approval, the panel can be installed from any vendor registered with the concerned DISC.
  7. After panel installation, submit the flat details and apply for net meter.
  8. After installation of net meter & inspection by discom, commissioning certificate will be available on portal.
  9. After receiving the certificate, apply for subsidy with bank account details and cancelled cheque.
  10. Subsidy amount will be credited to your bank account within 30 days.
