NOB- New Delhi news: The women’s reservation bill, which the women have been waiting for a long time, has been introduced by the central government in the Lok Sabha. It is remarkable that this bill was introduced in the first session held in the new Parliament building. On the second day of the special session of Parliament, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Women’s Bill amid protests from the opposition.
It was intended to provide 33 percent reservation for women in state and national level legislatures. However, it will be brought into force after the redistribution of constituencies to be held in 2026. Reservations apply for fifteen years. The bill states that one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and Assemblies will be reserved for women and filled through elections.
This quota is also implemented in seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The Constitution Amendment (128th) Bill 2023 was brought as part of the supplementary list of the proceedings of the House. The bill states that women are significantly represented in panchayats and municipal bodies, but in the state assemblies and parliament, the representation is still limited. It said that the role of women is very important in making India a developed country by 2047.
It said that after every redistribution process, the seats allotted to women will be rotated. Although this bill was approved by the Rajya Sabha in 2008, it could not pass the Lok Sabha due to the political situation at that time. It is known that this bill was approved in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi on 18.09.2023. Speaking on this in the Lok Sabha on 19.09.2023, the Prime Minister said that it is his intention that more women should participate in the development process of the country.
