NOB_Hyderabad:Telangana Police have launched a statewide special drive against gangs extorting money in the name of transgender persons, following a viral video from a housewarming ceremony in Hyderabad.

According to reports, on September 4th in the Chintal area, a family entering their new home was stopped and harassed by a group demanding Rs. 50,000. When the family said they could not pay such a large amount, the group allegedly abused them verbally, blocked their entry, and hurled curses. A video shot by the victims went viral on social media, sparking outrage.

Taking serious note of the incident, Telangana DGP C.V. Anand expressed strong displeasure and ordered all Police Commissioners and Superintendents to conduct a special drive across the state against forced collections and intimidation.

The DGP clarified that police action will be only against criminal gangs involved in illegal extortion and threatening behaviour at auspicious functions and commercial establishments, and not against the transgender community as a whole.

He reminded that the government is already implementing several welfare schemes for transgender persons’ livelihood, and many transgender individuals are leading a dignified life working as traffic assistants and in other government departments in the city.

Police warned that FIRs will be registered and strict action will be taken against those creating fear and indulging in criminal extortion.
