NOB-Maharastra news: A sensational incident that has brought shame upon the police department has come to light in the Akola district of Maharashtra. Within the very confines of the police station, a place meant for protection, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) behaved like a predator. He made a despicable proposition to a female inmate held in the lock-up, offering her money in exchange for handing over her daughter. The revelation of this incident has caused a massive uproar within the police department. It occurred at the Civil Lines Police Station in Akola. A woman had been arrested and placed in the lock-up in connection with a fraud case involving approximately Rs.80 lakhs. A 54-year-old ASI, who was on duty at the time, misused his authority in an attempt to coerce her into submission. While speaking to the woman, he remarked, “You are very beautiful, and your daughter must surely be beautiful as well.” “Send her to me; in exchange, I will give you Rs.10,000,” he blurted out in a lewd and offensive manner. Refusing to yield to the humiliating proposition made by the ASI in question, the female prisoner alerted higher authorities to the situation. Taking the victim’s complaint seriously, the District Superintendent of Police (SP) issued orders for the ASI’s immediate suspension. A case was registered against him under serious sections of the law, citing indecent behavior toward a woman and the misuse of official position. However, upon learning of his suspension, the ASI evaded the police and fled the scene. An examination of the accused’s past record revealed that there were previous allegations dating back as far as 10 years regarding his rude and inappropriate conduct toward women. This incident took place three days ago and has now become a subject of national-level discussion. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken *suo motu* cognizance of the matter. In addition to seeking a comprehensive report from the Maharashtra Police, the Commission has demanded that the accused who engaged in the abuse of power be handed down a severe punishment. It has further directed that the investigation be conducted impartially and completed within a stipulated timeframe. The Local Crime Branch police took the ASI into custody on the very same day.
