
NOB- Delhi news: The Supreme Court on 22.08.2025 revised the order issued to remove all stray dogs in Delhi NCR and shift them to shelters. Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta, Justice NV. A three-judge bench of Justice Anjaria changed this decision. The court clarified that only dogs that are harmful or ferocious should be shifted to shelters. The Supreme Court also suggested guidelines on matters like feeding stray dogs, rehoming them, and adopting them.
Key orders:
Only angry dogs: Amending the previous orders to shift stray dogs to shelters, the court said that only dogs that are harmful or ferocious should be kept in shelter homes.
Food for dogs: The court ordered that municipalities should identify special areas to feed stray dogs and feed them only in those areas.
Release of dogs: Vaccinated or sterilised dogs should be released back to their places.
Adoption of dogs by duty: Animal lovers can adopt dogs from dog shelters. Government officials should cooperate in this.
Municipal actions: No one should obstruct the actions of municipal officials who are moving dogs in accordance with the Animal Birth Control rules.
Actions in case of violation of rules: The court warned that action will be taken as per the relevant laws if anyone is found feeding dogs on the streets.
Construction of shelters: As per the orders given on August 11th 2025, the court directed municipal bodies to set up new dog shelters and pounds in Delhi.
Hearing of the case: The Supreme Court said that the final hearing in this case will be held after eight weeks.
