
The Indian Antarctic Bill is the first domestic legislation with regard to Antarctica in India. Specifically it will help to bring Indian research stations in the Antarctic region under the extent of domestic laws. This bill was placed by Minister of Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh. India has two active research stations in the Antarctic 1.Maitri and 2.Bharti.
27 countries already have domestic legislations on Antarctica except India, even though India from last 40 years onwards is sending expeditions to Antarctica the domestic legislations were circumscribed by international law.
Benefits of this bill will be, a committee will be set up by the government which permits for expedition of the continent and the bill also prohibits
- Individuals damaging the environment of continent either by excavation that is without granted permit or by hurting native species or by introducing exotic species.
- Introducing of micro-organism which are non-native is also prohibited
If anyone violates the above will have to pay high penalty of Rs. 50 lakhs and seven years of imprisonment.
