NOB- Bharat news: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Pamban Bridge, built with state-of-the-art technology, connecting the Indian mainland with Rameswaram on 06.04.2025 on the occasion of Sri Ram Navami.Later, he dedicated it to the nation. The new rail bridge, the new lift, and the Rameswaram-Tambaram train were virtually inaugurated. This is the first vertical lift railway sea bridge in India. The new bridge, built with modern technology, has gained importance in this area, which has a historical connection with Ram Setu. Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new bridge next to it on March 1, 2019, after the old Pamban bridge was damaged. Initially, Rs. 250 crore was allocated for the construction of the bridge. But by the time the bridge was completed, the cost had increased to Rs. 535 crore. The old bridge used to be divided into two for the passage of ships. However, the newly constructed railway bridge has a vertical lift that allows the middle part to be raised vertically by lifts instead of dividing it.The lift is raised by remote control with the help of motors. The 72.5-meter bridge section weighing 660 tons can now be fully raised in just 5.20 minutes. Even ships up to 22 meters high can pass under this bridge. While the vertical bridge technology was brought from Spain, the rest was prepared domestically. Senior Railway Engineer Nadupur Chakradhar from Vijayanagar district played an active role in the construction of this bridge.
