
NOB- Health news: The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over the increase in salt consumption worldwide. It has been warned that high blood pressure, heart disease and heart attacks are more likely to occur. Eating more than a teaspoon of salt per day can increase blood pressure. Reducing salt consumption could save 25 lakh lives worldwide every year. The WHO says that the average salt intake among adults worldwide is currently 10.78 grams, which is more than the recommended limit of 5 grams. It has been said that eating high salt foods can lead to oesophageal cancer, obesity, osteoporosis, Meniere’s and urinary tract diseases. It revealed that 18.9 lakh deaths occur every year due to excessive salt consumption. It explains that for every dollar spent on reducing salt consumption, there are $12 worth of health benefits. The WHO suggests that salt intake can be reduced by eating fresh, less processed foods. It advised to use spices and wild herbs instead of salt.
