NOB- Hyderabad news: Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has alerted the public against deepfake scams that are spreading with the help of technology. He said that people are creating the faces and voices of people we know and committing frauds using artificial intelligence (AI), and he suggested that a ‘safe word’ (secret word) is the only safe way to protect themselves from such things. Cybercriminals are cloning the faces and voices of our family members or friends with AI technology. After that, they make a video or audio call and demand money, making us believe that we are in some kind of emergency. Many people are easily fooled because they talk like people we know. Sajjanar said that such frauds are increasing across the country and that a ‘Pi-Labs’ report has estimated that they could cause a loss of about Rs. 70,000 crore by the end of this year. To avoid falling victim to these deepfake frauds, family members and close friends should set up a ‘safe word’ or secret code in advance. Whenever you receive a call from a number you know or a new number asking for money, you should first ask them to say that safe word. If they cannot say the correct word, it should be considered a fraudulent call. He made it clear that under no circumstances should you send money without verifying the facts. Sajjanar warned against clicking on links from unknown numbers and not being fooled just by the look and voice on the phone. He urged anyone who receives such deepfake calls and asks for money to immediately realize that it is a scam and file a complaint with the cybercrime helpline number 1930.
