NOB_ SC order to pay 9 crores to victim family for RTC hit

NOB- Andhra Pradesh news: The Supreme Court has ordered APSRTC to pay Rs. 9 crore as compensation to the family of a woman who died in a bus collision. Going back to the origins of this case, a woman named Lakshmi Nagalla is working in America. After returning home, on June 13, 2009, she was traveling from Annavaram to Rajahmundry in a car with her husband and two daughters when an oncoming RTC bus hit her. Lakshmi died in the accident. In this context, the deceased’s husband Shyam Prasad Nagalla filed a case in the Secunderabad Motor Accidents Tribunal seeking compensation of Rs. 9 crore from the RTC for causing his wife’s death. After hearing the arguments, the tribunal ordered the RTC to pay compensation of Rs. 8.05 crore in 2014. Challenging this verdict, the RTC approached the Telangana High Court. The trial court reduced the compensation to Rs. 5.75 crore and gave a verdict. However, the deceased’s husband challenged this verdict in the Supreme Court. He brought to the court’s attention that his wife had done her Masters in Computer Science in the US, was a permanent resident there, and was earning 11,600 USD per month. In this context, it is requested to sought Rs. 9 crore compensation from the RTC, which caused her death. A Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra heard the case on 11.02.2025. It ruled in favor of the victim’s family.
