Scientist in UK say that the nationalistic and capitalistic rush in being first to register vaccine may lead to get a vaccine with low efficacy. In this concern UK’s Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine trials are taking place in number of countries including countries with more infection. With the help of Department of Health, UK is trying to get licence for their vaccine by the end of 31st December if sufficient evidence is shown for vaccine efficacy.
For the above to happen, UK’s joint committee on vaccines and immunization (JCVI) will be responsible specially in forwarding the licensing process. But WHO’s Solidarity vaccines Trial Expert Group said in Lancet Medical Journal that a poor vaccine would be worse than no vaccine. So they urged all regulators to stick to the WHO’s guidance which clearly gives that less than 30 % effective vaccine should not be approved and at least 50 % effectiveness has to be shown. FDA goes by 30 % guidance due to political pressure which will make the vaccine effectiveness to fall below the threshold.
Finally it is said by the scientist that there is no guarantee that long term problems may not occur even if good results on safety and effectiveness of vaccine is shown.
