As per the Indian constitution, the President of India has some powers, roles and responsibilities which include legislative powers, executive powers, appointing powers, military powers and granting pardon
- The legislative power includes call or dissolve of the house of parliament by the president. Only after president’s official agreement, each and every legislation is enacted into law. But a Bill can only be sent back once by the president, except the money Bill. 12 members having outstanding contributions in different fields can be nominated as Rajya Sabha members by the President. When Parliament is not in session, the president, by the Union Cabinet advice can pass the ordinances if necessary.
- The Executive powers already present and more can be added to the president by the Parliament if required and can be delegated to state government if required. By the advice of Union Cabinet, the Prime Minister of India can be appointed by President. The chief justice is appointed by the president by the options given by Supreme Court. Other executive members like ambassadors, governors and attorney general will be appointed by president.
- The Military powers including all branches and services of Indian armed forces, the president is the commander in chief and has the power to declare peace or war with any country and hence all treaties are made in the name of president.
- Granting Pardon including the death penalty cases, the president has the power to grant pardon. If president grants pardon, then the death penalty is stopped.
