Mucormycosis is a rare fungus that generally when infects humans shows effects on eyesight in which enlarged eyeballs bulging out of eye sockets is seen first and eyesight is lost which can also lead to death. The mortality rate of this fungus is 50% though it is rare and takes 15-30 days to spread. It is a serious concern as it is reduced to 2-3 days incase of COVID-19 patients.
This fungal infection is seen in both COVID-19 infected as well as recovered patients as per Ahmedabad based retina and ocular trauma surgeon Dr. Parth Rana.
The reason may be poor sugar control, steroid dosages given in high amount and low immune power which are found in COVID-19 as well as COVID recovered patients for getting this Mucormycosis fungal infection.
