Boston University studies revealed that sufficient levels of Vitamin-D can prevent COVID-19 patient’s condition from becoming worst. Vitamin-D even reduces the need for oxygen.
In an article in PLOS One, 9.7% patient above 40 years who have sufficient Vitamin-D or not been infected has they have 25 (OH) D circulating in them.
Reduction in serum CRP (C reactive protein) and increasing Vitamin-D helps in modifying the immune response by reducing Cytokines (cause inflammatory response). 25-hydroxy Vitamin-D ( 25 (OH) D) is a measure of Vitamin-D in body, CRP ( commonly used to check inflammation levels due to bacterial and viral infections.
Michael F. Holick, Professor of medicine, physiology and bio physics and molecular medicine at Boston University School of Medicine said that if sufficient Vitamin -D is there in body, it can reduce release of cytokines and ultimately not allowing the COVID-19 patient to die.
Vitamin D acts as a modulator of rennin- angiotensin path way and deactivates ACE-2. Like in influenza cases in winter in which ACE-2 mediates increasing infection and will be reduced on exposure to Vitamin-D sources.
It is also observed that patients with sufficient Vitamin -D has lower levels of CRP and higher blood lymphocytes which means improved immune function.
Finally, Vitamin D is playing a crucial role in fighting against COVID-19 infections by enhancing the immune response as per studies. Sufficient levels of Vitamin -D also helps in not getting the infection by deactivating ACE-2 receptors.
