GST drastically reduced on more than 350 items

NOB-Chennai news: The central government has taken a key decision, providing huge relief to consumers. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that GST has been significantly reduced on more than 350 items. She made it clear that from now on, a board with details of the new tax rates must be displayed in every shop to ensure that the benefits of this reduction reach the people in full. Nirmala Sitharaman participated as the chief guest in the conference titled ‘Tax Reforms towards a Developed India’ held in Chennai on 14.09.2025. Speaking on the occasion, she said that the reduced GST rates across the country will come into effect from 22nd of September 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this decision was taken keeping in mind the public welfare, which will bring down the prices of many goods. She explained that the four tax slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) that existed earlier have now been simplified to two categories (5%, 18%). She expressed hope that this reform will reduce the tax burden on the 140 crore people of the country. Nirmala Sitharaman said that the state governments should take the responsibility of implementing the GST reduction properly at the field level, and that orders have already been issued to all the states in this regard.
