NOB-New Delhi news: Gyanesh Kumar (61) has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner of India. Vivek Joshi has been selected as the Election Commissioner (EC). This was finalized by the three member Selection Committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The names of the people who will take up the post of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioner (EC) were revealed in these notifications. Gyanesh Kumar was selected as the Chief Election Commissioner from the list of five candidates proposed by the search committee headed by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. With this, the selection committee has recommended the new CEC finalized to President Draupadi Murmu, according to official sources. Later, on 17.02.2025 night, the President issued an order appointing him as the 26th Chief Election Commissioner of India. Gyanesh Kumar will take charge as the CEC on the 19th of February 2025. Gyanesh Kumar will continue in this post as the CEC till January 26th, 2029. Gyanesh Kumar is a 1988 batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre. He was appointed as the Election Commissioner (EC) in March 2024. The assembly elections in Bihar, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal will be held under the supervision of the new CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Gyanesh Kumar played a key role in the drafting of the bill related to the abrogation of Article 370 while working in the Union Home Ministry.
