NOB- Ongole news: A minor girl (16 years) from Kottapatnam Mandal & village was raped by a person named Battula Chanti@ Wilson S/o Ratnaja, age 28, from Allur village. The girl is studying in the second year of Intermediate in Ongole Private College and every Sunday the girl and her family members go to Allur church. In this sequence, the accused, who used to play microphones in the church, introduced himself to the girl and made her believe that he loved her and wanted to marry her. On a Sunday in January 2019, when the parents went to the church in Allur, when no one was at home, he made false statements to the girl and told her that he was physically intimate with her, and later he had intimate relations with her many times when the parents were not at home, and threatened to kill her and her parents if she told anyone about this. Due to this, the victim did not tell her parents about this out of fear. After a few days, when the girl fell ill, the parents took her to a private hospital in Ongole, where the doctors informed her that she was pregnant. Then, when the parents questioned her strongly, the girl explained the truth. Later, the girl went to the Kothapatnam police station along with her parents on 06.08.2019 and filed a complaint. At that time, SI M. Srinivasa Rao registered a case. Based on the complaint of the victim, the Kothapatnam police registered a case, the then Ongole DSP K.V.V.N.V Prasad investigated the case, arrested the accused and sent him to remand. The charge sheet was filed in the court. Later, the police produced the witnesses in court in a timely manner. On this occasion, Special Public Prosecutor Gottipati Srinivasa Rao argued on behalf of the prosecution. Under the guidance of the District SP, the special POCSO monitoring team conducted an effective trial and proved the crime against the accused under various sections with proper evidence, as a result of which, on 20.08.2025, the POCSO Court Judge K. Sailaja sentenced the accused to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 10,000/-. Similarly, the court ordered the District Legal Services Authority to ensure that the victim gets Rs. 3 lakh as compensation. In this context, Prakasam District SP A.R. Damodar IPS said that such verdicts should serve as a lesson to those who commit sexual harassment and rape. He said that the district police are taking special steps to prevent atrocities against women and minor children. He said that schools and colleges across the district are widely educating students about the difference between ‘good touch and bad touch’, self-defense methods, awareness of the POCSO Act, eve teasing, fraud in the name of love, crimes against women and the laws against them. He advised girls to be brave and to tell their parents immediately if they face any problem. He also asked parents to take special care of their children from time to time. He clarified that those who commit sexual harassment against minor children must not bow to the law under any circumstances. For this, they said that they are closely monitoring the court trial and taking steps to ensure that the accused are punished severely. The District SP specially congratulated the then SI and current Ongole two Town CI Meda Srinivasa Rao, current Kothapatnam SI Sudhakar, Special Public Prosecutor Gottipati Srinivasa Rao, Court Liaison ASI E.V. Swamy, Constable M.Yallamanda, Kothapatnam Court Constable K.Prasad Rao, who worked hard to convict the accused in the above case.
