Second wave of COVID-19 in South Africa due to mutated strain ?

As per the reports of health minister Zuueli Mkhize of South Africa, the second wave of COVID-19 infection is active and fastly spreading. There is also an important information shared that this second wave is due to the mutated strain of SARS-COV-2 and has been identified by genomics scientists of South Africa has 501.V2.

Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO epidemiologist has shared information in a news conference in Geneva that African countries are growing the COVID-19 virus in labs to test the efficacy of the convalescence serum from recovered patients whether it neutralizes the virus or not.

Still studies are going on that the vaccines so far developed are efficient on the mutated virus of South Africa or not. South African health minister also confirmed that without proper data on new variant 501.V2, no additional restrictions are applied rather than wearing masks, personal hygiene and social distancing hoping that this new strain will not spread if these are followed.
